Is it me or do the Junior Infants look smaller every year? As I dropped off my son (6th class) yesterday on the first day of school we simultaneously went ‘Aww’ at the sight of these tiny individuals being shepherded by anxious parents into a whole new environment.
Later on that morning I met at least two harried mothers, both them and their children experiencing the fears and stresses of new schools and general ‘back to school’ hassle. I had a client – a child - later in the afternoon who had come down with a sore throat, temperature and vomiting two days after starting in a new school.
There’s no doubt about it – school can be stressful for both parents and children, especially when the child is starting in a new school. If our kids are happy, we are happy. There are several things you can do to help support your child through this transition.
Homeopathic remedies offer natural and extremely effective support both physically and emotionally. Issues like separation anxiety, fear of new environments and for the older children dealing with heavy study loads, mental stress – all of these can be relieved by homeopathic treatment. Physical symptoms which come on after starting school as a result of anxiety or stress can also be treated effectively and quickly.
Ideally a quick phone call to a homeopath would be what I would advise, as a stressed parent is often not in a good place to figure out which remedy to give (and I speak from experience here- my children and husband have their own homeopath!).
However it would be useful to have some of the following remedies and essences at home. They are available in most health food shops, some pharmacies and are the most commonly used in the above situations:
This remedy is great for separation anxiety in the young child just starting school or crèche who is whining, weepy and very clingy. Those who need this remedy are generally thirstless, warm and better for fresh air, worse in a warm room. Put a 6c or 30c in a bottle of water and let them sip it over the course of a day. Stop once they are feeling better.
This remedy works well for anticipatory anxiety. If your child is dreading school and seems apathetic, weak and tired, try this. Dosage as above
Another useful remedy for general and anticipatory anxiety. The child who needs this remedy will be nervous, impulsive and seem hurried. They are convinced they will fail and are full of dread. They crave sweets but are worse after eating them. They may have diarrhoea and bloating from anxiety. They are better for cool open air. Dosage as above.
One of Schussler’s Biochemic Tissue Salts, this remedy is extremely useful as a nerve tonic, calming the nervous system when it is overloaded. If your child is shy and nervy, easily frightened or startled, weak and easily exhausted, if they can’t sleep or have night terrors. For older kids it’s a superb exam stress buster, working well for performance anxiety, brain fag and mental exhaustion. You can give the low potency (6x New Era brand) tissue salt four or five times daily for the first month of school, or coming up to exam time. I would also highly recommend this for parents who are also feeling stressed!
These are also very useful, particularly for emotional distress. Rescue Remedy, Bush Emergency Essence or Healing Herbs 5-flower remedy are great at any time where there is fear, upset or distress.
I would also highly recommend the following Indigo Essences, which are specifically made for children (but useful for adults too):
‘Confidence’ essence gives kids help to believe in themselves at testing times, ‘Invisible Friend’ for when they feel lonely and scared and ‘Plurk’ for kids who feel under pressure to succeed and feel snowed under with homework. ‘The works’ is like an emergency essence and according to their creator, Ann Callaghan, is ‘particularly useful for the older teenager who feels like flipping out and even doing damage to him/her self or others.’
You can put a few drops of the appropriate essence in the kids’ water bottles for school every day as long as they seem to need them.
If your child does get ill or severely stressed, or if the remedies you have tried don’t work, do contact your homeopath. There are many other remedies which may be more suited your child’s needs. Please phone me on 087 7567988 if you would like more information or advice.
