Tomorrow is the anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. I would like to tell you a little bit about the remarkable plant which was the first to grow after the bombing, and the homeopathic remedy which was made from it.
Homeopathic remedies are made from many different sources, including plants, animals, gases and minerals. There are literally thousands of remedies and the list grows every year. Many of the newer remedies have come into being in response to the demands of a changing world and new kinds of traumas and toxins which can cause disease. One such remedy is Japanese White Oleander.
The homeopath who conducted the first ‘tests’ (we call them ‘provings’) on this plant was the founder of homeopathy Samuel Hahnemann, in the 1800s. In recent years another homeopath, Martin Miles, was in Hiroshima whilst conducting a lecture tour for the Japanese Academy of Homeopathy. He took samples from the actual oleander plant which was the first to grow after the bombing in 1946. The following is a quotation from his lecture on the homeopathic remedy subsequently made from that plant:
‘After the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, the land was scorched beyond all recognition…. A hundred thousand died in the blast and many more would suffer a slow painful end over the decades to come from the type of wounds no one had ever seen before. Of course nothing grew in a land so terribly traumatized; it was as if the earth had died. Then, one day, the oleander appeared, a small tree with an exquisitely beautiful flower, some blossoms are red, others are white. And so it was that for some years the oleander was the only plant of any kind that would grow in Hiroshima. The oleanders in the city are smaller than those in other areas of Japan and even now the trees and plants that grow there are of less stature than their brother and sisters that thrive elsewhere. Quite appropriately, the city adopted this lovely flower as an emblem of peace and regeneration.’
Homeopaths worldwide now use Japanese White Oleander as one of our main remedies for profound shock caused by trauma. It is effective even years after the event and can heal the long-term physical and psychological effects. It is a wonderful remedy for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.
It is also an excellent remedy for burns, ulceration and wounds. It treats radiation damage ( for example the scars and lesions after radiotherapy) and blood cancers.
The power of nature is truly remarkable, providing us with many of the answers we seek in curing disease - all we have to do is ask the right questions. Homeopathy both recognises and utilises this healing power in order to treat illness in a safe, gentle but truly profound way.
